• Examines the medical, scientific, public health and policy responses to a new disease, by focusing on the evolution of the AIDS epidemic. Begins with a review of how this new disease was first detected in the US and Africa, followed by the scientific basis as to how HIV causes profound dysfunction of the body's immune defense mechanisms, the rational development of drugs and the challenge of developing an HIV vaccine. Compares and contrasts the HIV pandemic with others that followed (e.g. COVID-19, mpox) and explores the lessons learned and not learned. The role of regional and international politics, public health and policy decisions, and the role that foreign aid have had in affecting the course of the global pandemic will be discussed.
